What an amazing day!

Susan Twitchell posted and led the trip and Luca Jungen and I were the lucky ones to have the opportunity to get out on the trip on this perfect summer day. Perhaps that sounds a little over exuberant but for a guy whose time outside away from work and family is rare and precious, the exuberance is well placed.

This climb is enjoyable to me since it combines a number of dimensions/sports/activities, whatever the word is, in one trip. To get there, we scrambled up a dry creek bed to the foot of the starting slab. The climb itself is just a little rambling, involving some moderate route finding and an interesting combination of sport and traditional climbing. It’s well traveled so it’s clean but not so popular, likely due to its trad flavour, so that it’s polished. There are some route alternates for someone who decides they might like a little more challenge on the day. In addition, the climb is close to Calgary with a short approach.

Susan was a thoughtful, positive and capable leader and both Luca and Susan were great company for the day. We decided at the beginning of the climb that we`d split up the lead; Susan would take the first 3, Luca the second and I`d take the last two pitches. Susan led the first three and provided an educational commentary on her thinking for rope management and protection placement along the way. Luca lead the next 3 very capably as well. I was happy to have such smart and strong partners.

Once we were off the climb, the exit was an easy up and down hike through the trees across to the southwest. This included a scramble across a dry creek gully and then over the creek feeding Cascade Falls which provided a cooling mist as we walked by. Up and over another hill got us to the single rappel found without undo scrabbling around, - as can be the case if you’re unfamiliar with its location – thanks to Susan, just short of Rogan’s Gully.

After another 45 minutes, sometimes boot skiing down a trail paved with typical Canadian Rockies powdery scree, we made the road, then back to the car.

Thank you to Susan and Luca for a very enjoyable day!
