Spring Condition in Kananaskis 5 Years, 6 Months ago
On Sunday, 28 April 2013, I hiked Porcupine Ridge for a "Beta Trip". The main part of the ridge is at about 2000 meters. I wanted to know about the snow conditions on the ridge -- that's the "Beta".

On all the mountains in this neighbourhood, the snow-line today is at 1900 meters.

Here's a photo of the snow at 1900 meters, today. It's only a foot deep. But the weather is warm and partly sunny, and that snow is wet and soggy. In this picture, it was easy enough to scramble the rock rib on the left. But above the rib was only squishy snow, and I found it too difficult to climb that stuff.

Below the rib on the left, rocks were falling spontaneously off the north-facing cliff. On other mountains nearby, I could see water running down their north-facing cliffs, too.

I turned around here. The hike back down was a pleasant Sunday Stroll.
